Batman Beyond Unlimited #12

Once again Batman takes a back seat as the main story focuses on Superman Beyond where new fire fighter Clarke Kent meets up with his old JLA friend Martian Manhunter, it seems that an alien race called the Trillians have come to Earth looking for Superman. They want him to answer for what they believe are crimes against their world,  crimes that have led to a war between themselves and a cat like race called the Mangals a war that has almost brought their planet to destruction. In truth the Mangals were slaves to the Trillans and Superman freed them an act which led to the plant wide war, as the Manhunter points out it was a bold decision swooping in and turning their lives upside-down.

The Trillians have tried to take Superman down and failed, (issue #11) and have now called in help in the form of interstellar bounty hunter Lobo. What follows is a good old fashioned no holds bard battle between Lobo, Superman and the Manhunter its not subtle but boy is it fun. In the end Lobo is victorious over our two heroes, which enables the Trillians take Superman off world to stand trial for crimes against their society.

War Crimes is an interesting story as it asks should someone impose their sensibility's onto another race or people and also shows the consequences of the actions of doing so, something that we could debate on for hours and never reach an agreement so I will keep my thoughts to myself on that one.

The story is by JT Krul and its a credit to him that I find this version of Superman far more interesting than the one who is running or flying around the current DC Universe, and the inclusion of Lobo in the Beyond Universe was good to see although he is a one dimensional character when used right he is a joy to read.

Batman is one of the back-up story's as his continual fight with the Joker King nears its conclusion, as New Gotham burns the Joker King is preparing to kill Batman but as you would expect it doesn't go entirely his way. as the badly injured Batman struggles to fully come round while asking the question is this the life I want (hell yes), Dick Grayson is swinging to the rescue in true Knightwing style if you discount the fact he only has one eye and he has a bullet in his spine. Meanwhile the new age Catwoman and Vigilante are handing over the last of the Jokez to Commissioner Gordon before making their getaway, the story ends with a now fully conscious Batman fully focused and flying off to take down the Joker King. For me this story seems to have been going on for a bit too long and I am keen to see more Batman Beyond stories, its not a bad story I feel it could have been wrapped up a bit sooner but then I'm not a writer so what do I know.

The third story in the book is the origin of Micron the Beyond version of the Atom and as far as origin story's go it is very good one shot story, the artwork is by Fiona Staples who is doing fantastic work on the book Saga another book that is well worth picking up.

Batman Beyond is still one of my top reads of the month and I would recommend it to anyone, and it doesn't mater to me if Batman or Superman have the lead story as I see it as one big universe.

Writer Bobby Nash has been announced as the winner of the best author in the 2013 Pulp Ark Awards, and if that wasn't enough Bobby also was involved in two other winning categories.

Bobby has posted his thoughts on been named best author at www.bobbynash.com where he had this to say, ''It is rare to find me at a loss for words, but that’s exactly what happened after the list of winners of the 2013 Pulp Ark Awards was posted at All Pulp earlier tonight. It took a while for the news to sink in, and even now I don’t think it’s really hit me. After years as a working writer I can now add the title “Award Winning” before my name, which is pretty darn cool, let me tell you''.

I had the honour of doing an interview with Bobby in the early months of my blog after becoming a fan of his work, and I am glad to say I have kept in contact with Bobby since then via social media.

So from a personal note it gives me great pleasure to say congratulations Bobby its an award that is richly deserved.

Batman & Robin Annual #1

The draft for this blog was written before the events of Batman Incorporated #8, I have decided to publish it to show just what a fantastic character Damian had become and morn the loss of story's we may now never get.

Damian is jetting around the world leaving clues for Bruce and Alfred to follow, the reason he is doing it is to help Bruce connect with his past a past Damian thinks he has lost touch with. As with all things that involve Damien not all is what it seems, while Bruce is jetting from country to country Damian is still in Gotham and leaving video clues for Bruce with the aide of a green screen.  And like any youngster left alone in the house he does nothing but party and get drunk while listening to David Bowie on the record player wait that was me many years ago, Damian been Damian just dons a very cool Bat costume and goes out fighting crime.

Over the course of several nights he becomes involved in a case involving a creature with very large teeth and a fire dispensing villain, while managing to annoy Detective Pierce who its safe to say is not a fan of the Batman.  Meanwhile Bruce is connecting with his parents past life a painting by his mother and visiting the place where his farther proposed while becoming increasingly more aware that not all is what it seems with Damiens jet setting, meanwhile Alfred is connecting with his past by treading the boards at the Old Globe Theatre.

Now you may think its a strange story to tell in the middle of all that's going on in the other Bat books but to be honest I found it a welcome break from all the darkness of those books, the interaction between Bruce and Alfred was very well written and had some nice comedic moments, While Damien dressed like a mini-me version of Batman made me smile while at the same time have me thinking I would like to see Robin in this costume. There is a particularly great scene where Commissioner Gordon activates the bat signal and Damien hangs around the shadows to make out he is Batman, but Gordon is not fooled and shouts Robin at him as he swings away. This is one of Peter Tomasi best work and shows how far the character of Damian has come particularly under his writing of the Batman & Robin Book, the art by Ardian Syaf is a joy along with the inks of Vicente Cifuentus there is nothing that I can criticise about this book at all.

The story ends with Bruce and Damian becoming closer as farther and son and Alfred discovering why he quit acting and took up been a butter, all in all a great Batman story and one of the best annuals of the new 52 so far.

Doctor Who Prisoners of Time pt 1

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Doctor Who IDW is producing a 12 issue story with each issue featuring an incarnation of the Doctor, presumably the final issue will feature all 11 given that there have only been 11 Doctors but that’s only a guess. Each issue is part of a bigger picture when they there all put together will build up to a drawing of all 11 Doctors and the TARDIS, the first issue features the Doctors first incarnation as played by William Hartnell.

A hooded figure (aren’t they always) is looking over the Doctors life’s both past and present he / she seems to have knowledge of the Doctor and the way he operates, they have noted that the Doctor is never alone that he always has companions no matter what incarnation he currently is. The figure has decided to hinder the Doctor by taking away his companions, thus leaving him alone and vulnerable.
The TARDIS has landed in Victorian London the Doctor has sent a message to his old friend the famous Biologist Thomas Huxley and is taking Ian, Barbara and Vicky to see one of his lectures, as school teachers both Ian, and Barbara are very excited about this but for the 25th century educated Vicky the lecture is somewhat of a bore. Once the lecture is over the Doctor and his companions meet up with Thomas and it during this time the Doctor finds out some of his friends students have gone missing, they were collecting samples in the newly constructed London Underground and never returned. Not been ones to pass up a mystery the Doctor and his companions join the search party in the underground tunnels, and it’s not long before they run into something very familiar that should not be there.
The Zarbi a giant ant like race are living in the tunnels and taking anyone they come up against, the Zarbi are normally peaceful but are susceptible to mind control. Through the Doctors dialogue we discover that his last encounter with the Zarbi was on Votis where they were been controlled by the Animus, a creature that was apparently destroyed by the Doctor so it’s a surprise to find that the Animus is now in the tunnels under London controlling the Zarbi again. The inevitable face to face encounter between the Animus and the Doctor takes place where the Animus tells the Doctor its plans for world domination, battle ensues and the Animus is destroyed by Ian running into it on one of the underground steam trains. That must have been conveniently parked up ready to roll and is apparently not that hard to drive (Casey Jones had me fooled all these years), after ushering the now docile Zarbi back to their home world by means of the portal they arrived through the Doctor then persuades his friend Thomas never to speak of what he has seen, so Job done.

As the Doctor ponders how the Animus got to be in Victorian London and who helped him as he could not have done it alone, he suddenly realises that he is now alone as all three of his companions has just vanished.

The comic gives new fans a glimpse into the world of first Doctor and his companions however they may find this none action style of Doctor little hard to embrace, this is a more thinking and organising Doctor due to been physically older than the incarnations that follow although he is technically the youngest of all the Doctors (timey wimey).

The story by Scott and David Tippton is excellent although I would expect nothing else from the writers who gave us the resent Star Trek / Doctor Who crossover, I also enjoyed use of the Zarbi and Animus classic monsters for a classic Doctor. Unfortunately the artwork is a bit of a letdown and I don’t think it did the story justice, my understanding is that there are different artists on each book so I'm hoping the art will improve as the story continues.

Now the issue did throw up a few interesting questions none more than who is the hooded figure taking the companions out of time, most fans are speculating the Master but that seems a little too obvious to me, I will throw in the War Chief the renegade Time Lord from the War Games story line but it’s only a guess.

Other point I noted was the Doctor getting Ian’s last name wrong calling him Chatterton, Chitterton and Chiggerton instead of Chesterton, now I don’t know if this is something the first Doctor did on the show although I am not aware of it or it has something to do with the companions been taken out of time and the Doctor starting to forget them. At worst it was a spelling mistake and I am creating scenario's out of nothing, if anyone has any thoughts on this please let me know.

Top 10 Geek out moments of 2012

Last year I bloged about the top ten things that made me geek out in 2011 well its a little later than I would have liked as life does have a way of encroaching on fun, but here are the 10 things that made me geek out in 2012 and like last year there is no particular order.

Harry Potter World (Orlando): When we booked to go to Orlando last year we made a decision not to go to Disney World not because we don't like it but because its so expensive, we did however buy tickets to Universal and Sea World mainly because we had never been to Sea World and Harry Potter was now in Universal. Both my wife and I are big Potter fans and were looking forward to seeing what this new addition to Universal would be like, I did have some reservation that it wouldn't live up to the hype about it or our high expectations but I needn't have worried. From the moment we saw Hogwarts as we entered the park we were awe struck with the world that had been created, the castle is magnificent both inside and out and holds one of the best interactive rides I have ever been on. The town of Hogsmeade is spectacular and makes you feel like you are actually in the film, one tip visit it on a night and you really see it come to life. The park characters also play their part in creating the magic of Harry's world with live singing and displays along with street sellers selling butter beer and pumpkin juice (not very good), a must see is the excellent Olivanders show where one child is picked from the audience to get his or her first wand just like Harry. After the show you magical exit into Olivanders wand shop and at $30 a wand they are not too expensive, the one down side for me was that I bought a display set of wands for $175 that I could not get on to the plane as hand luggage (and believe me I tried), they ended up costing me an extra £40 to put it in as extra luggage thank you Virgin Airlines.

Sea World: Having never bothered to visit this park before we took the plunge on this visit as the tickets were only $60 for unlimited access to both Sea World and the water park Aquatica, well I found myself asking why did we not visit here earlier. The shows are spectacular from the awesome Shamu show where we were 15 rows back and still got wet, to the breathtaking Blue Horizons show with Dolphins, Wales, Parrots and acrobats it is simply stunning. There are also ride for the more brave the Kraken looked terrifying (I didn't go on), you can also feed the Sea Lions, Dolphins and Sting Rays yes it does cost but when ever will you get the chance to do something like that again.

The Dark Knight Rises: There were two big comic book films out last year and for me as good as the Avengers was Batman was the better of them, Batman had a lot to live up to after the fantastic Dark Knight but it delivered in spades and tied up the whole story line by the end of the film something that directer Christopher Nolan should be applauded for.
The cast of Bale, Cain and Oldman were perfect as they have been throughout all three films, but special praise should be given to Anne Hathaway for her portrayal of Selina Kyle like many I thought no way when it was announced she would play the role how wrong I was. The clever thing about her character was at no point was she called Catwoman yet everyone watching knew that she was, her costume was a nod to the one worn by Julie Newmar in the 60's TV show but still looked modern. My one slight grumble about the film was the character of Blake who at the end of the film was revealed to have the first name of Robin, I would have much preferred for him to have been revealed as Dick Grayson but that's just the fan boy in me.
One last point at the end of the film my wife and I sat there as the credits rolled  up the screen, after around 5 minutes the lady from the cinema came up to us and said there is no end sequence on this film. As we looked around we were the only two left in the theatre and all the cleaning crew were by the door waiting to come in, we quickly got up and left looking rather sheepish.

The Avengers: Joss Whedon delivered a film I didn't think was possible and as a comic book fan I sat mesmerised as the Avengers came to life on screen, how he managed to keep everyone happy and ensure all egos were satisfied is beyond a mere mortal like me. Everyone has their time in the spotlight and their moment to shine although there were ones who shone just a little brighter than others, Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark is always more interesting than he is as Iron Man and Mark Ruffallo made an excellent Bruce Banner. However the standout performance for me was Tom Hiddleston as Loki his performance was simply perfect, the Avengers showed that it is possible to make a superhero film with costumes the same as the ones drawn in comics something I don't think has been done as successfully before.

Thought Bubble Comic Con: Like last year Thought Bubble makes my list again as it just keeps getting better and better, the highlight for me at this convention was meeting Robert Llewellyn, Kryten from Red Dwarf who was there to promote his new book. He happily chatted with me about Red Dwarf 10 and and his love for the show and his character was very clear to see, when I asked him if there would be another series he said there was nothing definite but would be surprised if there wasn't I left him one happy man.
Other highlights of the convention were a fully working Dalek that moved around the convention floor, meeting Charlie Alled of Walking Dead fame and having my wife Helen with me to share the con experience (her first con) I suspect it wont be her last.

Galaxy Tab: I joined the tablet generation and bought a Galaxy Tab after saying that I didn't really need one, however I changed jobs in July 2012 and was given a very generous amount of gift vouchers that I wans't sure what to do with. In the end I decided to buy a tab with them and plumped for the Galaxy and I am so glad I did, its brilliant for quickly surfing the web, checking out the social networks, catching up on the news in the geek worlds I tend to inhabit online and for reading digital comics. Yes I know I wrote a post on how digital comics wasn't for me but you are know looking at (well reading) the converted, I have my comixology account and I download and read comics on the tab as and when it suits me. I have particularly found it handy to be able to download comics that are hard to get in the UK, due to licencing issues comics such as IDW's Doctor Who and Ghost Busters are not officially shipped to the UK but are available for download which is cheaper than buying off EBay.

DC 75 Years of History Book: I have had my eye on this over sized book about the history of DC comics since its release in 2011, but it has always been out of my price range in truth I could not justify paying around £120 for a book as much as I wanted it. Then at Christmas my wife and I gave each other money so we could each buy what we really wanted I had a statue in mind (I like my statues), then as luck would have it Helen saw a copy of DC history book in the local comic store which had been reduce to £50 for a quick sale. I know a woman in a comic shop who would have thought, but that's a whole different blog for another time. Statue forgotten I walked out of the shop with the bargain of the year (well I thought so), it also cemented what I have always know that I have one cool wife and I'm lucky to have her.

Arrow: Suddenly Green Arrow is cool again not only is the current comic book one of my top monthly reads but the TV show has become a must watch for me, yes I know he takes his shirt off at every opportunity but if I looked like that so would I and you have to keep the ladies happy. However shirt apart the story's are well written and well acted and there is enough to keep none comic book fans entertained, while throwing in little Easter eggs for any long time comic fans as well.

Elementary: As a Sherlock Holmes fan I expected to hate this show but I have been surprised at how much I enjoy it, I am not a traditionalist Holmes fan and not against bringing him into the modern era. The BBC show Sherlock is one of the best interpretations of Holmes story's I have ever seen, but Elementary seemed such a radical departure I just didn't see how it was going to work. Not only was it set in modern day but also in New York not London, throw on top of that changing Watson's character to a woman played by Lucy Liu it could be nothing but a recipe for disaster or so I thought. Jonny lee Millers portrayal of the flawed detective is nothing short of brilliant he has all of Holmes traits off to a tea and Lucy Liu is also excellent in her portrayal of Watson, staying away from traditional Holmes story's is also a clever move by the writer giving Holmes modern cases to work on while keeping some of the Holmes mythology still there Irene Adler for example. At the time of writing this Elementary is on its mid-season break, and I for one cannot wait for it to come back on.

Batman: For me this is the best comic out there in 2012 nothing came close as this book has delivered quality stories month after month, the Court of Owls story line was brilliantly put together over the year giving us what I think has been Batman best story line since Knight Fall. Scott Snyder has crafted a dark, scary but brilliant world for Batman and his partners to inhabit, its a book that continues to be the shining light of DC's not so New 52.

So that's it my top 10 for 2012 which on reflection was a fairly good year, here's hoping 2013 will be as good if not better.
